To the Parents and Community of St Joseph’s Catholic School,

These are the findings of the Education Review Office’s latest report on St Joseph’s Catholic School.

St Joseph’s is an integrated Catholic primary school providing education for Year 1 to 8 students. Since the previous review the school board has appointed a new principal, and two new classrooms and an information, communication and technology (ICT) centre have been built.

The principal is providing reflective and well informed professional leadership and she is well supported by knowledgeable and dedicated senior leaders.

The school uses a range of assessment tools that show how well students are achieving. Parents receive clear, detailed, accurate, and timely reports about the progress and achievement of their children in relation to national standards. Data collected, analysed and interpreted shows that most students including Māori students are achieving above national expectations in reading, writing and mathematics.

Teachers use a range of effective teaching strategies to support student learning. These strategies result in high levels of student engagement with purposeful learning. The school successfully promotes and maintains respectful relationships in an inclusive learning environment.

The special Catholic character underpins the positive culture for learning and achievement that is evident throughout the school. Students are becoming increasingly confident and keen to contribute their
ideas.

Trustees understand their roles and responsibilities well. They receive a range of information from the principal and staff about student achievement and school operations; and understand the purpose and value of self review.

Effective governance contributes to the strong sense of common philosophy and direction which is evident in the school.

Staff successfully include parents and whānau in the life of the school and share ideas and strategies that parents and whānau can use at home to support children’s learning. The school continues to enjoy a strong partnership with parents and whānau in its community.

Future Action
ERO is likely to carry out the next review within four to five years.

This report provides an evaluation of how effectively the school’s curriculum promotes student learning – engagement, progress and achievement. ERO’s evaluation takes account of the school’s
previous reporting history and is based on:
what is known about student achievement information, including the achievement of Māori and Pacific students; decisions made to improve student achievement using assessment and selfreview information;
and teaching strategies and programmes implemented to give effect to the school’s curriculum.

ERO also gathers information during the review to contribute to its national reports. The national reports are published on ERO’s website.
